Larry, Moe & Curly were in the middle of filming Termites Of 1938 today (October 21st) in 1937. The short was released the following January. By the by, that would be 1938. Nyuk! Nyuk! Nyuk! We thought we would just get that out of the way early today!
The merry mix-up from the masters of mirth merriment and mayhem in this short comes from a call that was supposed to go to the Acme Escort Service but instead goes to the Acme Exterminating Company run by The Three Stooges.
The Boys do their best to play the high society role but of course fall into typical Stoogesque hilarity which spills over to the society folks who even try to eat peas with a knife!

The Three Stooges made their first television appearance today, October 19th on ‘The Texaco Star Theatre’ in 1948. The show, hosted by Milton Berle, is regarded as a watershed in moving the American public from radio to the new medium.
During Berle's run on the show television set sales grew from 500,000 in 1948 to over 30,000,000 in 1956.
This was the first of three guest appearances by Larry, Moe & Shemp with Berle and the beginning of scores of TV guest appearances by The Boys over the next 25 years.

News today from ShopKnuckleheads-
Larry, Moe & Shemp filmed a TV pilot on October 12th, in 1949 for ABC. The show was Jerks Of All Trades and was never broadcast and the series never materialized due to some contract issues between The Boys and Columbia. At that time studios and TV networks did not work together as they do today. Rather, the studios were concerned about what impact this new medium would have on their theater audiences.
As we know, television propelled The Three Stooges to new heights of popularity when their shorts were eventually released to TV just 10 year later.

]]>The three shorts released *yesterday* give us a nice spectrum of The Three Stooges body of work as we get a bevy of beauties; some classic and memorable bits; some firsts and lasts from wonderful supporting players and there are diamonds, oil, stolen art and even a gorilla!
The beauties are April, May and June, the widow Jenkins daughters and The Boys love interest in the 1939 release Oily To Bed, Oily To Rise. A memorable moment, and a visual icon from the Stooges’ body of work, is Curly atop the oil well uttering ‘I’m a successful cork’ and then ‘I’m an unsuccessful cork’ when the oil gushes and there is Curly at the top of the gusher.
But as the saying ‘All’s well that ends well’ goes, The Boys foil the swindlers, save the damsels-in-distress and end up with the oil and the girls. This was Richard Fiske’s first of nine appearances with Larry, Moe & Curly.
The 1949 release Vagabond Loafers is a bit of a rework of A Plumbing We Will Go with Shemp doing the bulk of the water damage while Larry does some intriguing gardening, especially the scene where his head pops up from the lawn and The Boys generally destroy the whole house. But in typical Stooge fashion, their antics actually foil the art thieves and all ends well.
This was Dudley Dickerson’s last short basically reprising his great role from A Plumbing We Will Go and Symona Boniface’s last of 24 appearances with The Three Stooges, which included working with Larry, Moe, Curly and Shemp in shorts and with Joe Besser and Joe DeRita in some of their solo performances.
Kenneth MacDonald reprises his role as the bad guy Dapper Malone in 1955’s Hot Ice, one of the very few times a character reappears. In this case, purely through the use of footage from 1948’s Crime On Their Hands plus some footage from The Hot Scots for the opening Scotland Yard sequence.
This remake has Shemp swallowing a diamond, again, and Larry being clobbered by a gorilla, again, and The Boys foiling the crooks, again. The new footage and dialog used by producer/director Jules White made this remake entertaining and with enough new plot twists to stand apart from the earlier version.

Larry Fine was born today, October 5th, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1902 which makes this a big day in Three Stooges history. Today he would be 119! Larry, along with Moe, was there for all the iterations of The Three Stooges. He was there from Soup To Nuts in 1930 to Kook’s Tour, filmed in late 1969 and released in February 1970; less than one month after Larry’s debilitating stroke.
He was there with Healy. He was there with Moe and Shemp and Curly and Joe and Curly Joe. He was there on the vaudeville stage, for the MGM shorts, all 190 Columbia shorts, the 1965 cartoon series, their TV guest appearances and all their feature films.
Fortunately, he’s still with us, at least on film, VHS and DVD so we and future generations can enjoy and laugh at the wild and wonderful antics he performed with The Three Stooges!

Bud Abbott, born tomorrow, October 2nd, in 1895 in Asbury Park, New Jersey, never worked with The Three Stooges. However, Shemp did appear in several Abbott & Costello films plus Shemp and Joe Besser both appeared in the 1949 feature Africa Screams. Their most famous bit ‘Who’s On First’, is a true comedy classic.

]]>Stage Mother, the MGM feature released today, September 29th in 1933, gives us the rarest of the rare from Larry Fine’s body of work as this was his only feature film appearance without any of the other members of The Three Stooges. While the film had some musical and comedic elements, it was a drama, another departure from Larry’s comedic work. Yes, that’s Larry smiling in the picture wearing a derby, more often seen as the chapeau of choice by Curly..
However, keeping to the traditions of The Three Stooges, there is a faux pas in this film as one of the characters, impresario Mark Thorne, as spelled correctly on his theater poster, is spelled incorrectly as Thorn in a Variety magazine headline.
Maureen O’Sullivan was one of the film’s stars who portrayed Jane Parker in the six films in the very successful MGM Tarzan film series in the 1930’s. Sullivan, born in Ireland and educated in Dublin, Paris and London was a classmate of Vivien Leigh, who would also come to America and make her mark in film history with her portrayal of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With The Wind.

One of the most recognizable pieces of dialog in the entire Three Stooges body of work is ‘Calling Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr, Howard!’ from the short Men In Black; which was released today, September 28th, in 1934.
The short was nominated for an Academy Award, the first of many types of awards and recognition that would come their way for their work.
Larry agrees that it is nice to be nominated for such a prestigious award. He recommends this mug to memorialize the nomination and the short. Plus it’s just plain fun!
Moe reminds us all that besides doctors, The Three Stooges portrayed a plethora of characters. Interestingly, characters they never actually portrayed give us one of the most popular images. That would be Dewey, Cheatem & Howe!
Hey, Moe! Hey, Larry! I did my first Nyuk! Nyuk! Nyuk! in Men In Black! This short is on The Curly Classics DVD Collection. If you want to save some dough, this is the way to go! That’s Soitenly a bargain!

The short Gents Without Cents was released on September 22nd in 1944. Besides being famous for the ‘Niagara Falls’ routine, which it was and still is, there is a bit of interesting bits about one of the bit players in this short. Who would that be, you ask? Why, that would be Judy Malcolm.
Okay…so can you tell us more? Soitenly! Judy was Fay Ray’s stand in the 1933 feature King Kong. She also performed some of the stunts. Her first actual screen credit came 10 years later in the 1943 short Dizzy Pilots, released September 24th. But she was never in the film! Judy, along with Sethma Williams, was credited as Girls In Hangar…but they actually were only used in publicity photos and lobby cards. So here’s a gal that did double duty in one film and her name is nowhere to be found and then gets a credit when she did not appear! Why, that’s a story like The Three Stooges would write! Nyuk! Nyuk! Nyuk!
Judy Malcolm did appear in several Three Stooges shorts including as the heavenly switchboard operator in the 1948 short Heavenly Daze, a role she reprised in the 1955 remake titled Bedlam In Paradise. Yes…that’s her in the picture with Shemp, Moe and Marti Shelton as the angelic angel Miss Jones. As to Marti, these were not only her only two appearances with The Three Stooges…these were her only two film appearances!
Threes Everywhere! In a bit more quirky bits about a bit player, actor Al Thompson, born today, September 21st in Philadelphia in 1884 played in 33 films with The Three Stooges…and 3 of them were in feature length compilations and 3 were in Shemp & Curly Joe DeRita solos!

News today from ShopKnuckleheads- Today is a busy day for everyone that interacted in the Stoogeverse!
The Columbia short The Good Bad Egg starring Joe DeRita finished shooting today, September 16th, in 1946. All of the 11 supporting cast members, including Dorothy Granger, Vernon Dent, Emil Sitka and Symona Boniface, were regular cast members in The Three Stooges shorts.
The production crew, with Jules White directing an Ellwood Ullman story edited by Edwin Bryant, also were all regulars on many Three Stooges shorts.
Of course Joe DeRita would eventually join Larry and Moe as Curly Joe in the last iteration of The Three Stooges, touring extensively and starring in the feature films The Boys made for Columbia in the 1960’s and their 1965 cartoon series.
Shemp was busy this day, too, as his solo short Salt Water Daffy from Vitaphone was released on this day in 1933.

News today from ShopKnuckleheads- The Three Stooges often used Shakespearian references and the short Three Hams On Rye, released today in 1950, has such references. First, the title itself. ‘Ham’ as referring to actors actually has a history in Shakespeare lore. Shemp also quotes the Bard in this short.
Besides these references to classic theater, The Boys step out and showcase more of their talents as Larry, Moe & Shemp not only sing but actually wrote the serenade song, music and lyrics, used in the short.
As we said, music for the ears. As to music for the wallet, well that’s over at ShopKnuckleheads! There are tons of great items on sale in the Featured Products section, click here!

Oil’s Well That Ends Well finished shooting today in 1957. This was one of only two of the 190 shorts The Three Stooges made for Columbia that had only The Three Stooges in the cast. The other was Self Made Maids where The Boys played multiple parts.
The short’s title is an obvious reference to Shakespeare, which the Stooges used often. Fitting, since Moe was a thoroughly trained and accomplished Shakespearean actor. But that’s a story for another day.
For today, the story is if you go on over and check out the many Three Stooges items on sale, plus many more in the Awesome Entertainment Collection, you’ll get some great stuff and save money, too! So you will have a shopping experience that Soitenly ends well! Nyuk! Nyuk! Nyuk!

Dorothy Comingore played Susan Alexander Kane in the 1941 classic Citizen Kane, voted the best movie by the American Film Institute. Comingore never appeared with The Three Stooges…at least under that name. As Linda Winters she played April Jenkins in 1939’s Oily To Bed, Oily To Rise and Daisy in Rockin’ Thru The Rockies made in 1940. In fact this was her last appearance as Linda Winters. She then changed her name and her next film was Citizen Kane.
In both her appearances with Larry, Moe & Curly she was part of a girl trio: April, May & June Jenkins (whom The Boys marry at the end of Oily To Bed, Oily To Rise) and Daisy, Flossie & Tessie (Nell’s Belles in Rockin’ Thru The Rockies).
Well, that’s all interesting, you say…But why are we talking about this actress today? Because it’s her birthday! She was born on August 24th in 1913 in Los Angeles. Happy Birthday Dorothy!
