ShopKnuckleheads: On This Day in History

News today from ShopKnuckleheads- July 13th, 1934 "Punch Drunks" aired!

The second Three Stooges short The Boys made at Columbia, Punch Drunks, is unique. It was actually written by Larry, Moe & Curly and they received the story credit (as Jerry *Curly* Howard, Larry Fine & Moe Howard) along with their starring cast credits.

Moe wrote the original screenplay then had Larry and Curly work with him to develop the finished script. In effect, their vision of having goal oriented plots began with this film. So The Boys themselves are actually responsible for the form, direction and narrative energy and the format that would make their films so successful.

This is the only short for which they received Story credits. In fact, Punch Drunks was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry as one of the 25 honorees for 2002 from a list of over 1,000 nominees!

Another unique feature of this short is the beginning that finds The Boys not initially acting in consort as Moe is a fight manager, Curly is a waiter and Larry is a violinist.
